Too often, nonprofits will develop a written marketing strategy as an afterthought, and this postscript becomes problematic as it disrupts and derails the implementation stage.

Community media centers are usually better served by investing resources in developing a marketing and communications strategy designed with their organization’s overall strategic plan in mind. As community media centers move through the process of developing this strategy, it’s important to remember that the marketing and communications strategy must be married to the mission and goals outlined in the strategic plan.

Take, for example, three common goals many community media centers have: improving community outreach and engagement, increasing volunteers for the organization and securing additional funders. A strategic plan designed to help a media center achieve these three goals will help improve the center’s sustainability. Therefore, it’s crucial a media center develops a marketing strategy that’s aligned with these three goals.
